Multi-Pure races to Boston's aid

Ruptured pipe cuts water in Boston
Ruptured pipe cuts water in Boston

Everyone knows Boston for its patriotic American history and even the famous marathon, but this time Multi-Pure is racing to help the citizens of Massachussetts with their threatened water supply.

Access to safe drinking water is something many of us take for granted, but this weekend in Boston we learned how quickly that assumption can be proven false.

Millions of people in the Boston area were left without safe drinking water following the rupture of a 10 foot diameter water main. Local officials immediately issued an emergency “boil alert” for Boston area residents because of the unknown contaminants which may have been introduced to the water supply. Although repairs were soon made to the damaged water line, water officials were uncertain how long it would take to effectively disinfect the water supply system.

This chain of events has prompted many Multi-Pure customers and Independent Distributors to contact the company with questions as to how the crisis affects their health and their Multi-Pure drinking water system. Multi-Pure encourages you to adhere to all warnings and alerts issued by the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority, including “boil alerts” which may be announced.

As a user of Multi-Pure’s drinking water filters, you are helping to protect yourself and your family from dozens of potential water contaminants. However, the Multi-Pure system is intended to be used on treated water, which is microbiologically safe. Please keep the following in mind:

A.) Multi-Pure recommends that you filter the water through the Multi-Pure first, and then boil it as per the city's recommendations. We suggest this because the filter will still reduce levels of contaminants unaffected by boiling such as lead, mercury, VOCs and disinfection by-products. Another short term option may be bottled water.

B.) After the boil alert has been lifted, you will want to disinfect your system and then replace your filter cartridge. Here are the disinfection instructions listed in the Owner’s Manual:

To flush a unit that may be contaminated:
1. Confirm that water is turned off to the unit.
2. Relieve the water pressure (if below sink unit) by opening the unit faucet.
3. Remove and discard the used filter.
4. Clean & rinse out the inside of the housing.
5. Add 5 to 7 drops of bleach, such as Clorox™ or Purex™ (5 ¼% sodium hypochlorite) to the bottom canister.
6. Reconnect the housing top and bottom without the replacement filter.
7. Turn on water and let unit housing fill up with the water/bleach solution.
8. Allow unit to soak for at least 30 minutes.
a. Countertop Units: To disinfect the spout, place your finger over the tip of the spout and turn the unit upside down. Repeat this procedure 2 or 3 times during the 30-minute soak period.
b. Below Sink Units: To disinfect the faucet spout, remove the spout and place it in a container with one-quart of water and bleach (use 5 drops of bleach) and allow to soak for 30 minutes.
9. After the housing has soaked for 30 minutes, disassemble the top and bottom and pour out the water/bleach solution. Rinse out the inside of the housing.
10. Replace the filter (cartridge) following the instructions with the new filter.
11. Follow the instructions with the replacement filter for reconnecting and flushing your unit.

C.) For a limited time, Multi-Pure is offering a 20% discount on replacement filter cartridges for those customers living in the affected Boston area. If customers would like to receive the replacement cartridge quickly, we will also extend an offer to expedite shipping at 50% off.

Multi-Pure is committed to providing the very best in drinking water filtration products. If you have any concerns about your filter system or how the water crisis effects your filter system, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are always here to serve you!
